About the process
Increasing sensitivity of a tooth, spontaneous raging toothache and discomfort when chewing are amongst the most common symptoms that could indicate the need for root canal treatment.
Root canal treatment is when a dentist removes infected tissue from inside your tooth. They will clean and fill the inside of your tooth to prevent further damage or infection. Root canal treatment can save your tooth from having to be taken out.
Need for Root Canal Treatment
In the middle of each of your teeth is a mixture of blood vessels and nerves called pulp. Pulp sits inside a space called the pulp chamber. Connected to the pulp chamber and the pulp are one or more root canals. If your tooth is damaged, bacteria from your saliva can get inside it. This causes irritation, pain and swelling.
This can happen in a number of ways including:
- severe tooth decay
- repeated treatment on the tooth
- a cracked tooth, caused by an injury
- a broken crown
- cracked or loose fillings
- gum disease
- an injury, such as a blow to your mouth
The pulp can become infected and this can spread to the root canal. If the infection spreads further it can cause an abscess, which is a collection of pus. This can be painful and tender and can cause swelling around your tooth and jaw. Sometimes your tooth may look darker in colour than your other teeth, which means that the nerve inside your tooth is dead or dying.
What is Dental Root Canal Procedure
In a two sittings root-canal approach:
- The first is focused on the task of cleaning and shaping the tooth's root canal system.
- The second is used for filling and sealing the tooth.
- The two appointments are usually scheduled just a few days apart.
Your dentist, or endodontist will make a small access hole in your tooth or filling. They will then use small files and sterile solutions to clean out the root canals of your tooth. Teeth usually have one to four canals. A temporary dressing will be placed in the canals and you will be asked to return for another appointment usually in one to three weeks. In the final appointment, a permanent filling will be placed in the canals and on top of the tooth. In many cases a porcelain crown will be advised, as root canal treatment may weaken the tooth structure.
The aim of root canal treatment is to prevent your tooth from being taken out by removing the damaged pulp and treating the infection. Without treatment, the infection may spread further into the jawbone and you may need to have the tooth taken out.
Advantages of a two-sittings approach are that it makes managing any flare ups that develop easier and more predictable, and it also gives the dentist an opportunity to monitor the progress of the tooth's healing process.
The most typically used materials include tooth sealant, zinc oxide-eugenol, resins, calcium hydroxide and glass ionomers. Most commonly used materials for obturation include solids, semi-solids and pastes, depending on the type of cavity.
AMS Approach / Advantage
At Allure MedSpa, our expert dentists use the following simple measures with each patient to optimize patient comfort while doing a Root Canal:
- Present a calm, well-organized staff and treatment environment.
- Provide information both about the procedure and what sensations to expect.
- Assure the patient that no treatment will be initiated unless the patient is 100% completely numb.
- Assure the patient that effective pain control will be provided with medication after the procedure.
While clinical excellence and artistic integrity are perhaps the most important factors in choosing a cosmetic dentist, a dental practitioner should also have a good chair side manner. Our expert Dentists truly welcome patient’s inputs and make them active participants in the treatments so that they feel at ease.
If you are looking for a high quality dental care in a comfortable setting, with friendly staff and the latest dental technology, Alluremedspa is just the right place for you.
3 stages of procedure
The first stage is a proper understanding of the extent of infection. Your endodontist examines the tooth and takes X-rays of the affected tooth. This lets him get a picture of the extent of the damage.
Root canal treatment is usually done under local anaesthesia. This completely blocks pain from your tooth and, jaw area and you will stay awake during the procedure.
Our well qualified and experienced Dentist and dental assistants will not only assist in all phases of your dental care, but also provide you with a safe, clean, and comfortable visit.
Given that the extent of infection and the condition and temperament of each patient is different, root canal treatments entail a customised treatment and not a standard one for all patients.
Possible Consequences / Precautions
Because the tooth and its surrounding structures have been affected by disease that was present in the pulp, treatment of the tooth may also produce temporary imitation and mild discomfort following the procedure. This can usually be avoided by chewing from the other side of the mouth or taking pain medication as directed by the doctor.
AMS recommendation for best results
Patients should avoid eating solid food on the tooth. Follow your dentists post treatment instructions to get the best results.
The aim of the root canal treatment is to save your teeth and help you get rid of the discomfort. A root canal done at Alluremedspa helps you attain that.
The duration of the sitting depends on the extent of the infection.
The Root Canal takes 30 minutes to 1 hours.
It can take some time to clean out the roots of a tooth and if the root has many, eg. 3 to 4 roots, it might require 2 sessions of several hours.

Quick Facts for Dental Root Canal
Are you the right fit for the procedure?
A root canal is usually needed because there is pain or swelling, which indicates an inflamed or infected nerve. Root canal therapy will alleviate the pain or swelling and keep the tooth an integral part of your dentition. In some cases, where there is not any discomfort, the tooth can still be chronically infected. This can often be detected with X-rays and careful examination.
Any of the above conditions will warrant a root canal.
Are you ready to take decision or need help? Travel with decision makers.
In procedures where prior consent of immediate family is required, you will have to travel with the decision makers.
Your dentist will examine you and ask about your symptoms, including any pain you’re having. They may also ask you about your medical history and any previous treatment you’ve had on your teeth. An X-ray of your tooth will be taken. This can help to show which tooth is causing the pain and needs treatment, and how far any infection has spread. This helps your dentist to make sure that the tooth is not too badly damaged for root canal treatment, and that your tooth can be fixed.
